National Geographic Channel premieres The Lost JFK Tapes: The Assassination, which uses previously hidden footage of the day President Kennedy was shot and killed.

U.S. President John Fitzgerald Kennedy (JFK) was assassinated in Dallas, Texas on November 22, 2963. The shocking images of his fatal motorcade have become familiar to many, as have the memories of where they were when they heard that the American President had been gunned down. National Geographic Channel is airing a two hour documentary containing footage that has been locked in a vault since 1963. The documentary, The Lost JFK Tapes: the Assassination debuts on the National Geographic Channel on Monday, November 23, 2009 at 9:00 PM ET.

The Lost JFK Tapes: The Assassination

The documentary shows historic footage of President Kennedy and First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy as they arrived in Dallas. Broadcasters noted that this the first official presidential visit to Dallas since 1948. There was no inkling of the tragedy ahead as the newscasters described the president's arrival on that fateful day. The day was described as clear and sunny, a beautiful day. Crowds lined the Dallas streets and waved at the attractive President and First Lady.

One broadcaster did note that the president's car did not have a bubble, so it was an added worry for the Secret Service. The President and First Lady rode the convertible in an open motorcade through the streets of Dallas, greeted by a cheering crowd.

The film cuts to a news broadcast as it interrupted regular television programming. The broadcaster stood in front of a curtain, hands shaking, and announced that President Kennedy and Texas Governor Connolly had been gunned down.

The footage used in The Lost JKF Tapes: The Assassination has been in storage since 1963. At first the footage had been kept under wraps by the television station that owned them. Later the films were stored by a museum.

The film is unique in its “You were there” approach, bringing viewers into a historic day that started with innocent banter as the newscasters and the crowds cheered on the popular President and First Lady.

The day turned shocking when President Kennedy was shot and subsequently died. The newscasters were choked up at reporting the grim news that the President was dead.

Partial Time Line of the Day Kennedy was Assassinated

According to a time line on the National Geographic Channel website, President and First Lady Kennedy flew into Dallas on Air Force Once, landing at Love Field at 11:40 AM. They were greeted by Dallas Governor John Connolly and his wife, who rode in the front seat of the presidential limousine. The presidential procession left Loves Field at 11:50 AM.

The procession proceeded through the streets of Dallas, until 12:30 PM, when shots rang out and hit President Kennedy and Governor Connolly. Kennedy was taken to Parkland Hospital and attempts were made to revive him. President John Fitzgerald Kennedy was pronounced dead at 1:00 PM after receiving last rites by a Catholic priest.

At 2:38 PM Lyndon Johnson took the oath of office, becoming President of the United States.
