Film Scheduled For October Release Titled Capitalism: A Love Story

The new project by the Academy Award-winning filmmaker Michael Moore finally gets a name.

On July 8, 2009, the name of Michael Moore’s latest documentary feature was announced. Capitalism: A Love Story, to be released in the United States on October 2, 2009, will explore the disastrous impact that corporate greed has on the lives of Americans and throughout the world.

Capitalism: A Love Story

Moore explained the reason for choosing this particular title for his “relationship movie” about an unusual kind of attraction. “It will be the perfect date movie,” he said in a prepared statement. “It’s got it all – lust, passion, romance, and 14,000 jobs being eliminated every day. It’s a forbidden love, one that dare not speak its name. Heck, let’s just say it: It’s Capitalism.”

Film Project First Announced at Cannes in 2008

The previously untitled Michael Moore project was first announced at Cannes in 2008, amid much excitement from his French fans. In his first film since 2007’s Sicko, Moore’s new documentary will revisit some of the issues explored in his earlier works. The filmmaker planned the release date of Friday, October 2 for Capitalism: A Love Story to coincide with a year and a day after the United States Senate voted for the $700 billion Wall Street bailout to private financial institutions. Moore has previously described the bailout as “the biggest robbery in the history of the country.”

Known for his humor and unrelenting efforts to force change in America’s social, economic, and political landscape, Moore has made three of the top five highest-grossing documentaries of all time. His films Fahrenheit 9/11, the 2008 Academy Award nominee Sicko about America’s health care system, Bowling for Columbine, the Academy Award winner for best documentary in 2003, and his 1989 groundbreaking documentary Roger and Me all enjoyed theatrical and DVD releases. Moore also has written and starred in the television shows TV Nation and The Awful Truth.

Overture Films is in charge of American distribution. The company develops, produces, acquires, and distributes feature film length, theatrical motional pictures worldwide. The studio is a wholly owned unit of Starz Media. Overture’s most recent releases include Sunshine Cleaning, which was acquired at Sundance Film Festival, and stars Amy Adams, Emily Blunt, and Alan Arkin.
